5 tips to master social SEO
Hashtags, captions, and more for better searchability

Yes, social media SEO is important! You likely already know how to use hashtags to help your social content get found. But I also encourage my clients to use smart captions, optimize their profiles, and most importantly, engage with their audience to help boost visibility and searchability.

QUICK BITES
Social media SEO works in two main ways:
🔍 Search Within Social Platforms
Users can enter keywords, hashtags, or phrases into the search bars of platforms like Instagram, Twitter, or LinkedIn. By optimizing your content with relevant keywords and hashtags, you increase the chances of appearing in these search results.
🌐 Search Engines (Google, Bing, etc.)
Public social media posts can also show up in search engine results pages (SERPs) when someone enters keywords or a query in a search engine, like Google.
BRAND BUILDING
By optimizing your social media content, you can increase your chances of showing up in search results on both social platforms and search engines. This means more people can discover your brand, leading to increased website traffic, potential customers, and ultimately, revenue growth.
Here are the five things I encourage clients to do to boost their SEO on social media.
Research hashtags: Use tools like Hashtagify or RiteTag to find popular and relevant hashtags in your niche.
Use popular and niche keywords: Mix widely-used hashtags with more specific ones to balance reach and targeting.
Create branded hashtags: Develop unique hashtags for your brand or campaigns, and encourage your audience to use them. This increases brand visibility and creates a searchable collection of user-generated content.
✍️ Write Optimized Captions
Use keywords: Incorporate relevant keywords naturally into your captions to improve searchability. Just be mindful to not overdo it. Your captions should still sound natural, not like a string of robotic keywords.
Be descriptive and direct: Clearly explain what your post is about in the first few lines to grab attention and improve relevance for searches.
Include a CTA: Add a clear call-to-action to encourage engagement, which can boost your content's visibility in social algorithms.
👤 Optimize Your Profile & Bio
Include keywords in bio: Include relevant keywords that describe your brand and offerings. Again, be careful not to overdo it.
Link to your site: Add a link to your website or a relevant landing page (products, booking, etc) to drive more traffic.
Use a recognizable branded profile pic: Use a consistent, high-quality profile picture across platforms to build brand recognition.
💬 Engage With Your Audience
Respond to comments: It seems obvious to respond to comments, but actively engaging with your followers has a real and positive effect on SEO and post visibility.
Use interactive features: Implement polls, contests, and other interactive elements to increase engagement and time spent on your posts.
Repost UGC: Share user-generated content to build community and provide social proof, which can improve your brand's credibility and visibility.
📊 Track Performance
Monitor hashtag performance: Use platform analytics to see which hashtags drive the most engagement and reach.
Track engagement metrics: Keep an eye on likes, shares, comments, and saves to understand what content resonates with your audience.
Adjust strategy: Use insights from your performance tracking to refine your social media SEO approach over time.
Understanding User Intent 💡
Social SEO is not just about using the right keywords, but also about creating content that matches what your audience is actually looking for.
Look at the questions and phrases people use when searching for content in your niche. Categorize intent by determining if they’re looking to learn (informational), to buy (transactional), or to find a specific website (navigational)?
Develop posts, videos, and stories that directly address these intents, and include hashtags that reflect the user's purpose (e.g., #HowTo, #ProductReview, #BuyNow).
TOOL TIME
Why I ❤ Moz Keyword Explorer
While there are loads of keyword research tools on the market, I love Moz Keyword Explorer for its ease of use.
What it is: Moz Keyword Explorer helps you find relevant keywords, see their search volume, and even identify questions your target audience is asking online.
How to use it: Enter a seed keyword related to your brand or niche. Moz will generate a list of keyword suggestions, along with their estimated search volume and difficulty score. Focus on incorporating high-volume, low-difficulty keywords into your social media content.
Why I love it:
Free and user-friendly: Even beginners can easily navigate Moz Keyword Explorer.
Valuable insights: It provides more than just keyword suggestions; you'll also get data on search volume and competition.
Great starting point: The free plan offers enough features to help you identify relevant keywords for your social media strategy.
Is it worth it? Absolutely! Even with the limitations of the free plan, you'll gain valuable insights to help you optimize your content for better searchability.
